History Of Allenby, Toronto
Allenby was established in the 1400s by the Huron Tribe, who inhabited a village here until the 1700s.
According to Lyman B. Jackes Tales of North Toronto this village was an organized community centred around a spring of pure water. This spring is located where the modern water tower stands on Roselawn Avenue, west of Avenue Road. The tribal huts were situated on the grounds of Allenby Public School.
Jackes also mentions that the hill, near Allenby school was not natural but man made a result of the Hurons practice of storing food. The current neighbourhood took shape with the establishment of Allenby Public School in 1927 named in honor of Lord Allenby, a hero from World War One.
