History of Aurora Heights
The initial settlers, in this area were William McCellan who arrived and settled on lot 82 concession 1 to the west of Yonge Street in 1797. The Cody family also played a role. Settled on lot 83 concession 1 in 1802. The Codys were a Quaker family who immigrated from the United States. Over time these lands came into the possession of Daniel McLeod.
McLeod operated a known tavern that gained notoriety as a gathering place for loyalist forces during the Mackenzie Rebellion in 1837. The creek that flows through Aurora Heights has earned a nickname among St. Andrews College students as “The Shads”. This name is likely derived from Shadrach Lundy, who is depicted on the 1860 Tremaine Map as owning land to the creek to the north where St. Andrews College stands today.
Aurora Heights underwent a transformation from rural to residential in the 1950s when it became the large scale subdivision in the Town of Aurora. There was excitement surrounding this development with $25,000 allocated for promotion and five model homes, for potential buyers to explore. Construction of two hundred homes began in 1957 offering a range of housing styles including forty detached houses. By 1958 residents started moving into their homes and Aurora Heights gradually took shape into the neighbourhood we know today.
