History Of Belhaven, Georgina
In the 1800s if your village didn’t have a train station you’d have to travel by stagecoach. Lots of villages had hotels to host travelers on their journeys. Lake Simcoe and Belhaven were rest stops, for both merchants and vacationers. The Belhaven hotel and tavern was a known stop for stagecoaches in the past. Guests would often be welcomed by a person sporting a Plug hat (a black hat with a wide brim also known as a top hat) which led to the nickname Plug Mount for the village. By the 1860s the community adopted the name of Belhaven. Belhaven gained significance locally as it hosted town hall meetings, for what was North Gwillimbury Township. When York Regional Municipality was established in 1971 Belhaven became part of Georgina Town.
