History Of Centennial Park, Toronto
The Centennial Park area in Toronto was one of the spots where active farms existed. It wasn’t until 1968 when developers bought the Hirons farm that this region became fully urbanized.
Author Ester Heyes in her book “Etobicoke – from furrow to borough ” reminisces about the Hirons farm. Harold Hirons and his father owned the 88 1/2 acre property on Elmcrest Road at Rathburn Road for generations. Despite the surrounding land transforming into areas Harold Hirons continued to run a successful dairy farm supplying milk to Toronto daily.
Mrs. Hirons expressed sympathy for their neighbours who couldn’t enjoy picking strawberries, fruits from their orchards, fresh vegetables from their gardens and eggs from the nest. This marked the end of a way of life.
In 1967 Centennial Park was established by the Borough of Etobicoke as a project to honor Canada’s hundredth birthday. The neighbourhood derives its name from this park.
