History Of Cricket Club, Toronto
The area known as The Cricket Club was first settled by a man named Andrew McGlashan, a Scotsman who arrived with his family in the 1800s. The McGlashan family ran a tannery at the intersection of Yonge Street and York Mills Road until the 1860s.
In 1876 Andrew Bathgate purchased the McGlashan property. Eventually Bathgates descendants sold their home in 1907 to William George Gooderham, the owner of the Gooderham and Worts distillery.
Gooderham serendipitously discovered a spring of water on his properties hillside, along Yonge Street where the York Mills Gardens apartments stand today. This led to the establishment of Mineral Springs Ltd., which bottled and distributed this water worldwide until the 1920s.
During the 1900s Gooderham played a role in developing this neighbourhood into a residential area. He was also instrumental in founding the Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club which has been an institution since it opened its doors in 1925.
