History Of Davisville Village, Toronto
Davisville Village got its name from John Davis, who came to Canada from Staffordshire, England in 1840. John Davis took on the role of the postmaster, in Davisville. Played a key part in establishing the Davisville Public School. In addition to these roles he was also involved in running the Davis Pottery, which ended up being an employer in the Village.
The southern section of Davisville was divided into plots during the 1860s with most of the land belonging to the Davis family. On the other hand the northern part of the Village was owned by the Church. This area, known as the Davisville Glebe remained undeveloped until 1911 when it was sold to the Dovercourt Land and Building Company. Interestingly this same company was responsible for developing the Lawrence Park neighbourhood.
A noteworthy addition is that John Davis’ grandson Jack managed the Davisville Post Office located at Yonge Street and Davisville Avenues northeast corner. The two story building still stands as a testament to their family’s legacy, in that area.
