History of Gorham-College Manor
Gorham College Manor got its name from Eli Gorham, who settled in this area during the 1800s and established the Gorham Woollen Mills along the banks of Bogart Creek. Eli Gorham was also responsible, for building the brick house, in Newmarket, which still stands today at 674 Gorham Street. His son, Nelson Gorham lived at 265 Gorham Street.
Along Gorham Street you’ll find houses that were constructed during the 1800s and early 1900s; most of them are still standing to this day. In 1909 Pickering College, a private school founded in 1842 relocated to Newmarket. The schools operations were supported by a farm that was eventually sold to developers in order to fund needed repairs and campus expansion. The former farm grounds now make up the College Manor neighbourhood, which was developed in the 1990s.

Gorham Street is named after a known family who played a role, in Newmarkets development while College Manor refers to Pickering College, a prestigious private school that has been an integral part of this community since 1909.

Gorham College Manor has seen some changes as new families have moved in and revitalized the homes indicating signs of gentrification.
