History Of Hoggs Hollow , Toronto
Hoggs Hollow got its name from James Hogg, a Scotsman who arrived in 1824 and ran a distillery and grist mill becoming one of the successful millers in the valley.
In 1856 James Hoggs sons, John and William divided their fathers estate into lots known as “Hoggs Hollow.” While there were one hundred and forty one lots a few houses were constructed during that period.
Today four of the Hoggs Hollow houses still exist. Among them are two mill workers’ cottages relocated to 4150 Yonge Street in 1986 now serving as the entrance to Auberge du Pommier Restaurant. The remaining two original houses stand at number one and number five Old Yonge Street; both have undergone renovations. Other historic landmarks in the area include The Jolly Miller tavern from around 1857 at 3885 Yonge Street and the George S. Pratt House from 1886 at 17 Mill Street.
The modern day Hoggs Hollow neighbourhood began to be developed in the 1920s growing progressively until its completion in the 1960s.
