History Of Humber Valley Village, Toronto
The Humber Valley Village area was established as part of the “Humber Valley Surveys” initiative, by Home Smith and Company. This project encompassed 3,000 acres of land along the Humber River extending from the Queensway to Eglinton Avenue. Along with creating the Humber Valley Village neighbourhood this extensive development also included the Kingsway, Baby Point, Old Mill and Princess Anne Gardens Manor neighbourhoods. Home Smith and Company played a role in developing the St. Georges Golf Club located off Islington Avenue.
Robert Home Smith, a law graduate from the University of Toronto served as the president of Home Smith and Company. He was an individual who held positions such as Chairman of the Toronto Harbour Commission, contributed to advancing Northern Ontario Mines development and presided over railway companies in North America.
Construction of the residences in Humber Valley Village began in the 1930s near James Gardens, along the Humber Valley. Unfortunately Robert Home Smith passed away in 1935 before witnessing the completion of the Humber Valley Village neighbourhood in the 1960s.
