History Of Jackson’s Point, Georgina
Jackson’s Point got its name from John Mills Jackson, a merchant and political writer who came to settle in this area in 1828. Jackson was involved in the steamship Simcoe, which was constructed nearby in Holland Landing. In 1833 Jackson was appointed as a Justice of the Peace. Unfortunately he passed away during a trip to his homeland of England in 1836. One of Jackson’s contributions was leading the construction of St. Georges Anglican Church on Hedge Road. The introduction of the Lake Simcoe Junction railway in 1877 marked a turning point for Jackson’s Point transforming it into both a hub and a popular summer destination. The wharf at Jackson’s Point played a role in trade with ice from the lake being transported by train to Toronto. During summer months the train provided transportation for Toronto residents seeking the waters and gentle breezes of Lake Simcoe. The Toronto and York Railway commenced operations to Jackson’s Point in 1908 bringing forth an era of prosperity for the area. By the 1890s Jackson’s Point had already become well known as a tourist hotspot featuring hotels and summer cottages. The Briars Resort gained recognition as a vacation spot during this time period. By the 1910s Jacksons Point had earned its reputation as “Ontario’s cottage country,” a title that it proudly upholds today.
