History of Langstaff
The neighbourhood of Langstaff derives its name from John Langstaff, an immigrant who arrived here from New Jersey in 1808 on horseback. Langstaff held the honor of being the teacher, at the school. He found love. Married Lucy Miles, daughter of Abner Miles, a known innkeeper in the area. Following their marriage Langstaff took charge of his father in laws property located on the corner of Yonge Street and Highway 7.
He played a role in the community as he operated woodworking shops, a pail factory, a general store and a blacksmith shop. It was no surprise that this area became known as Langstaff Corners. In 1870, when the Langstaff post office opened its doors for business it was John Langstaffs grandson who assumed the role of the postmaster.
The Langstaff family gained recognition primarily for their contribution, to medicine. For four generations this esteemed family served as doctors to the community. Their medical practice was established within a Georgian Loyalist structure called Holmwood situated on Yonge Street.
In 2012 one of their grandsons sold Holmwood House to the City of Richmond Hill which subsequently relocated it north to its current address at 107 Hall Street.
