History Of Ledbury, Toronto

Ledbury used to be a quaint farming community, until the 1900s when the first homes were constructed along Bedford Park and Woburn Avenues replacing the Lawrence farm. The northern area of Ledbury beyond Woburn Avenue was previously owned by Alfred St. Germain, a publisher of the Toronto Evening Journal. In 1922 the St. Germain property was divided into lots by the Melrose Realty Company. Named Melrose Park. H.A. Clark, the president of Melrose Realty handpicked street names for this subdivision like St. Germain after its owner and Old Orchard Grove to honor St. Germains apple orchard legacy. Other street names such as Deloraine, Melrose, Marmion and Falkirk were inspired by Sir Walter Scott’s works since Clark was an admirer of his writings. Ledbury’s residential expansion continued until the 1950s with the addition of Ledbury school and Ledbury Park to enhance this community.

Lifestyle

Avenue Road stands out as one of the shopping hubs in Toronto. It offers a range of shopping options from high end gourmet food stores to fashion boutiques, home décor shops and even a budget friendly supermarket. You can also find pharmacies, kids stores, sports outlets, beauty salons, antique shops, professional services and an array of dining choices, along this street.

On the other hand the Bathurst Street shopping area presents an ambiance compared to Avenue Road. Here you’ll discover a mix of specialty stores selling food and gifts, cozy delis serving up delicious treats, various dining spots and some renowned bakeries renowned for their freshly baked Montreal style bagels. Ledbury, Toronto Parks & Facilities

Ledbury Park, situated at the heart of this neighbourhood recently underwent a transformation. Was honored with a Canadian Architect Award of Excellence for its approach to planning community parks. The central feature of the park is a reflecting pool and ice rink connected to a swimming pool and a water play area designed for young children. Additionally there are playgrounds for children within the Ledbury area.

The Armour Heights Community Centre on 2141 Avenue Road offers dance and fitness programs for adults along with activities for toddlers and preschoolers. Nestled inside the community centre is the Armour Heights Public Library. The Morris Winchevsky Centre on 585 Cranbrooke is an organization that provides children’s Sunday school and senior club activities as well as hosting educational and cultural events. Lastly the modern Barbara Frum Public Library, at 20 Covington Road boasts an array of amenities including a 150 seat auditorium.

Ledbury, Toronto Transit

Residents of Ledbury benefit from public transportation options. The Bathurst bus provides a connection to the Bloor Danforth subway line while the Avenue Road bus links passengers to the Yonge University Spadina subway line. For those looking for some exercise the Lawrence station on the Yonge subway line is within a walking distance from the neighbourhood. If residents choose to drive downtown they can reach their destination in twenty five minutes via Avenue Road. Additionally beyond Ledbury’s boundary there is an on-ramp to Highway 401 which connects to a network of major highways in and out of the greater Toronto area.

Ledbury, Toronto Elementary, Secondary High Schools

Ledbury Park Elementary and Secondary High School is a school for children from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 situated in a community that includes people from economic backgrounds, cultures, faiths and languages near the Bathurst and Lawrence area. These new homes range from 2500 to 4000 feet in size and typically showcase brick, stone or stucco exteriors with a mix of modern architectural styles. The yards are generous in size with some boasting swimming pools.
