History Of Markland Wood, Toronto
The Markland Wood neighbourhood was established on land originally owned by John Silverthorn in 1810. Silverthorn, a millwright, wasted no time in constructing a sawmill and a gristmill along the Etobicoke River that bordered his property.
These mills became the heart of the community, where local farmers brought their grain to be milled into flour and logs to be transformed into lumber. The day “Mill Road” served as a shortcut for farmers heading towards the mills.
Operating until 1870 the Silverthorn Mills ceased operations due to a decrease in water flow in the Etobicoke River that no longer provided power. The Silverthorn family then shifted their focus to farming. Excelled at it, even selling tomatoes from their farm to the Campbell Soup Company.
In 1958 recognizing growth, on its way the Silverthorns sold their farm to developer Mark Cavotti. In honor of Cavottis contributions this new development was named Markland Wood giving rise to a neighbourhood.
