History Of Maryvale, Toronto
Maryvale was once a part of the Village of Ellesmere, a farming community that thrived along what is now known as Ellesmere Road. Back, in the 1800s the Village of Ellesmere flourished with its school, post office and church. It also boasted blacksmith shops, a wagon making shop and two sawmills. By the 1950s the market gardens and dairy farms of Ellesmere made way for today’s Maryvale neighbourhood. The name “Maryvale” pays homage to the Maryvale farm known for breeding and raising racehorses. This farm used to occupy the land where Maryvale Public School stands today. An old horseshoe from the Maryvale farm is displayed on a plaque in the entrance hall of Maryvale Public School.
