History Of Pefferlaw, Georgina
Captain William Johnston, a retired officer hailing from Scotland received a 1,000 acre land grant in 1819. Being a sailor he likely felt at ease with Lake Simcoe nearby. Alongside his brother Robert the hardworking Johnston siblings constructed a sawmill, gristmill and wooden mill, along the river flowing through their land. In 1832 Johnston established a store and post office. The community was named Pefferlaw by Robert Johnston inspired by its mention in The Select Writings of Robert Chambers; Popular Rhymes of Scotland from around 1825. This reference points to a farm in Chirnside parish, Scotland—a connection that aligns with the time when Robert Johnston settled in Canada as noted by Chambers’ work, on Pefferlaw.
