Pottageville got its name from Edward Pottage, a known landowner, in the mid 1800s. The abundant forest surrounding Pottageville and the strength of the Humber River contributed to a sawmill industry with two mills running at the time during its peak. Pottageville seemed to reach its peak in the 1800s and early 1900s boasting amenities, like a hotel, tannery, blacksmith shop and general store. Additionally there were coopers catering to the flourishing pottage trade during that period.
