History Of Rathnelly, Toronto
Rathnelly’s rich history is centred around the Rathnelly house constructed in 1830 by Senator William McMaster. The house was named after Rathnelly, Ireland, where McMaster was born. The estate remained under McMasters ownership until the 1880s when it was sold to developers marking the beginning of the present day neighbourhood.
In an event, during Canada’s centennial celebrations in 1967 Rathnelly residents humorously declared themselves as a republic within Canada. To commemorate their independence they elected a queen, organized a parade, released a “air farce” of 1,000 helium balloons and distributed Republic of Rathnelly passports to residents.
