History Of Rouge Hill, Toronto
The history of the Rouge neighbourhood follows a pattern, to other neighbourhoods situated in the northern part of the city. Initially it was predominantly a farming community, until the 1950s, when the construction of Highway 401 bisected the edge of the Rouge neighbourhood.
Following the completion of Highway 401 residential development began along Sheppard Avenue in the 1960s. However most of the neighbourhood’s expansion occurred during the 1970s and 80s. The urban transformation of the Rouge neighbourhood persisted into the 1990s marked by housing subdivisions, a shopping plaza, educational institutions, green spaces and recreational facilities.
