History of Rural King
The King Heritage and Cultural Centre situated at 2920 King Road boasts a collection of books and artifacts that delve into the history of King Township. A visit, to this place is definitely worthwhile. In the area of King you’ll find a handful of quaint hamlets at crossroads that have managed to retain their charm despite the march of time and urbanization.
Among these hamlets are Kettleby, Laskay, Lloydtown and Snowball. The King Christian Church, dating back to around 1851 used to be a hub for the Kettleby community until it was relocated to the King Heritage and Cultural Centre in 1982. Of all these hamlets mentioned Snowball stands out with its name.
According to records at the King City library this unique name is said to have originated from a church community built in 1850 where snowballs were used as mortar joints during winter before being sealed in spring. Churches played a role as points in the early rural communities of King Township. Many of these churches were associated with the Quaker sect that held sway across York Region in the 1800s. The settlers in these areas primarily engaged in farming activities. Ran mills, along the banks of the Humber River and its tributaries.

These include the Music, in King Concert Series, the immersive Studio Tour King, the vibrant Schomberg Street Gallery captivating art shows and exhibitions engaging theatre performances and dance shows informative historic tours and talks as well as enlightening educational workshops.
