History of Rural Whitchurch-Stouffville
After the ice age the massive glaciers moved back leaving behind waterways and kettle lakes. These natural features played a role, in shaping the settlement patterns of the First Nations tribes who originally inhabited this area. In the 1800s Quaker and Mennonite families migrated here from the United States.
By the mid 1800s Rural Whitchurch Stouffville consisted of farming communities that revolved around sawmills, gristmills and flour mills. These knit hamlets often included a store, a cooper (barrel maker) a blacksmith shop and occasionally a post office. Many communities also had their church and one room schoolhouse.
Over time as these mills ceased operations these thriving communities gradually faded into history. However their influence lives on through concession roads with their names and through blue roadside markers that bear place names such, as Bethesda, Bloomington, Gormley Lemonville Pine Orchard Preston Lake Vandorf.
