History Of Sutton-Jacksons Point, Georgina
Sutton has been a village in Georgina since the 1800s. Originally called Bourchier’s Mills after its founder Captain James O’Brien Bourchier, who built mills and factories along the Black River. Captain Bourchier also served as the postmaster of the village. After his passing in 1872 at the age of 75 the village post office was renamed Sutton West in 1885 later simplifying to Sutton. The name Sutton is believed to have been inspired by Major William K. Raines, who constructed a residence known by names like Sutton Lodge paying homage to Raines family home, in Wales located near Sibbald’s Point.
