History of Unionville Markham
The initial settlers of Unionville were a group of immigrants who arrived here, from the United States in 1794. Led by William Berczy this community consisted of sixty four families who played a role in establishing several of Markham’s neighbourhoods. Philip Eckhardt, heading the Unionville branch of these pioneers and his family were instrumental in shaping the formation of Unionville. In the 1830s Eckhardt constructed a flour mill named “Union Mills” on the banks of Bruce Creek, which’s one among tributaries flowing into Rouge River.
As the Union mill thrived so did the surrounding hamlet. Gradually it transformed into a village and in 1851 a post office was established with the name “Unionville.” William Eckhardt (Philips grandson) was determined to foster growth in Unionville and thus created its subdivision plan. In 1871 thanks to William Berczys efforts Unionville became a stop on the Toronto and Nippissing Railway line. This development led to expansion and prosperity for the Village of Unionville.
Additionally the Stiver family holds significance in Unionvilles story. They were actively involved in constructing heritage houses that still stand today within Unionville. Furthermore they built Stiver Mill, on Station Lane during the 1900s.
Today the Mill complex holds value in Unionville’s activities and local gatherings. It attracts tourists who are captivated by the restored milling operation. The vibrant red exterior of the complex takes visitors on a journey, to Unionvilles beginnings offering a stark contrast, to the thriving urban hub that has emerged nearby.
