West Deane Park, Toronto

The West Deane Park area is known for its atmosphere attracting both long-time locals and new residents alike. The rustic charm of the neighbourhood is enhanced by the presence of Mimico Creek Valley, which meanders through its heart. Residents often spot a range of wildlife in the valley, including foxes, beavers, deer, pheasants, groundhogs, skunks, raccoons, coyotes, tailed hawks and bluebirds. For those who appreciate nature and wildlife encounters West Deane Park is a place to call home.

History Of West Deane Park, Toronto

The West Deane Park area used to be farmland until it was bought by Percy Law, a builder in the 1930s. Law not ran a construction business but also indulged in breeding prized cattle and racehorses, on the land. As a tribute to his passion for horse racing Law transformed a brick farmhouse into a white house in the Colonial Revival style reminiscent of “Old Kentucky.” The house, featuring Corinthian style pillars, still stands proudly at 59 Beaverbend Road today. Additionally Law added a coach house, a farm manager’s residence and stables on the property. The farm manager’s house can still be seen at its location, at 18 Deanewood Crescent.

In the 1960s Percy Law sold his hobby farm to developer Edmund Peachey. Peachey went on to develop the neighbourhood we now know as West Deane Park. Named it after his wifes family name. Deane.

Lifestyle

People living in West Deane have access to The East Mall Plaza (near Rathburn Rd.). The Loblaw supermarket south of Burnhamthorpe Rd. Additionally Cloverdale Mall, a shopping centre situated at Highway 427 and Dundas boasts a variety of amenities including, over 90 stores, eateries and professional services.

West Deane Park, Toronto Parks & Facilities

West Deane Park can be found nestled in the Mimico Creek Ravine Valley. The park boasts a trail for walking and biking along the serene Mimico Creek. Additionally visitors can enjoy amenities such as a playground for children, two baseball fields and a shaded spot, for picnics. At the edge of the park you’ll find the Martingrove Tennis Club, where four tennis courts transform into an ice rink during the winter months.

West Deane Park, Toronto Transit

Buses operating along the East Mall and Martingrove Road link passengers to Go Transit stations. Additionally buses on Eglinton Avenue and Rathburn Road offer connections to the Yonge University Spadina subway line.

For drivers quick access is available to Highway 427 South, Highway 27 North and Highway 401 which serve as links to Toronto’s commuter highway network.

West Deane Park, Toronto Homes

Most of the homes in West Deane Park were constructed during the 1960s. These houses include ranch style bungalows, split level homes and Georgian Revival centre hall designs each sitting on lots with driveways and attached garages. Additionally there are row houses and multiplex homes situated on the outskirts of this community.

The section, near Beaverbend Road saw development at a stage compared to the rest of the neighbourhood resulting in more contemporary family style residences built in the 1980s.
