History of West Gormley
West Gormley is a community, in Richmond Hill established back in 1905. The CN Railway originally known as the James Bay Railway laid down tracks through West Gormley in 1906. Below the Stouffville Sideroad a two story station was constructed in 1907. This development spurred the growth of businesses and industries around the station. As these enterprises flourished their owners built houses along Gormley Road West, which eventually became the towns residential street.
The presence of the Gormley station brought prosperity to the area particularly benefiting farmers who transported milk and other produce to the city from there. However after World War II trucks began replacing railways as the mode of transportation for industries. This shift led to a decline in business along the Gormley railway line and, at the station.
Although eventually demolished remnants of the railway still. Remain part of West Gormleys landscape. Enough West Gormley experienced a revival partly attributed to railways when the Gormley Go Train station opened in 2016.
