History of Woodland Hill
Timothy Rogers, a known Quaker, from Vermont was the first to explore this region in 1800. He was deeply captivated by its beauty. Returned a year later in 1801 with 40 Quaker families. In recognition of their efforts in establishing homesteads and contributing to the construction of roads Yonge Street each family was granted 200 acres of land in York County.
While some of Rogers family members and friends chose to settle Timothy Rogers himself went on to establish Quaker communities in Uxbridge and Pickering where he ultimately made his residence. It is worth mentioning that descendants of the Rogers family later founded Rogers Communications Inc., which has become one of Canadas most prosperous companies.
Woodland Hills, now recognized as an area was originally part of King Township, until 1971 when the formation of the Region of York led to an expansion of Newmarkets boundaries encompassing this region. Woodland Hills remained predominantly rural until the 1990s and early 2000s when residential development began taking place. It is important to note that this community is still undergoing development.
